Kenya Coffee Beans

Kenya's growing regions sit on the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range, at elevations between 1,400 and 2,000 metres, in deep, mineral-rich red volcanic soil. Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, and Embu are the most celebrated districts for specialty production, each sharing the hallmark Kenyan profile while expressing its own terroir. The growing sector is dominated by smallholder farmers organised into cooperative societies, with cherry processed at centralised factories, Kenya's term for wet mills, under the cooperative's management. That structure, combined with a well-regulated auction system, has historically given Kenyan coffee strong traceability and consistent quality control.

What defines Kenyan coffee in the cup is intensity. The SL28 and SL34 varietals, selected by Scott Laboratories in the 1930s for their yield and cup quality, produce blackcurrant, tomato, and bright, structured citrus acidity, combined with full body, layered sweetness, and a long, clean finish. Double-fermentation washed processing, where the coffee is fermented twice before final washing, strips the mucilage cleanly and sharpens that clarity and brightness. Kenya AA, the country's largest bean grade, is the most widely seen on the international market, though AB and PB (peaberry) grades can be just as expressive. When we have Kenyan lots in stock, you'll find them below.

Browse: African coffees · Ethiopia · All single origins · Washed process coffee

Hodson blend: named after our founders

The sweet base of brown sugar and milk chocolate shows off soft red fruit notes for a balanced but characterful cup.

Where the name comes from

Jamie and Karen Hodson founded Ozone in New Plymouth, New Zealand, after a six-week trip through Central America, visiting coffee farms and meeting producers.
